Rice Diet
When people hear the words “Rice Diet,” they immediately envision a diet with rice. Lots and lots of rice. This could not be further from the truth. Actually, the Rice Diet is named after the program at the Rice House in Durham, North Carolina. This residential program was begun in 1939 under the auspices of Duke University and has been modified over the years for the successful treatment of obesity. Designed at first for the extremely, or “morbidly” obese, the Rice weight loss program has aspects that can be enjoyed by anyone needing to lose more than 20-30 pounds. People come from all over the world to lose weight, treat their kidney disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure at the Rice House. The program is flexible depending on how much weight patients need to lose as well as the amount of supervision they feel they need.
For instance, some patients stay for as little as two weeks to “jumpstart” their weight loss process, and others stay as long as four to six weeks. The costs of the program are lower than some other health spas; after the fourth week, the cost is under $600 per week for the remainder of your stay. The actual diet starts out as grain-and-fruit only; this phase requires medical supervision. After that, Phase II includes beans, vegetables, grains, and fruit. Fish is allowed once per week. The professionals at the Rice House suggest remaining on a vegetarian diet as long as you have not achieved your goal. In addition to the medically supervised calorie-restricted meals, patients enjoy exercise, relaxation, and educational activities.
