New Beverly Hills Diet
The New Beverly Hills Diet came out in 1996, a revision of the extremely strict “original” plan which limited your diet to fruit only for the first 10 days and did not include animal protein until the 19th day. Judy Mazel, the creator of the weight loss plan, says she has revised the diet to be “balanced” based on U.S. government guidelines, including protein and starches in the first week. The New Beverly Hills Diet is based on the principles of “food combining,” an idea which has been around in various forms since the early 20th century.
Basically, Mazel says that the reason why we get fat is not because of what we eat, but when we eat it. She offers those who want to lose weight some interesting rules for how to eat and what you can and can’t eat together. There is no such thing as a “bad” food in her book, just the wrong time to eat it. Even alcoholic drinks are allowed, provided you follow the food combining rules that govern the particular type of drink (perhaps befitting Beverly Hills, liquor is a carb, wine is a fruit, but champagne goes with everything!).
The diet follows a 35-day plan, with 21 meals that you can choose from freely, as long as you follow the “Correct Combining” rules. Here is a sample of a few of the rules:
Begin the day with “enzymatic” fruit.
Do not combine fats with fruit.
Don’t combine proteins with carbs as a general rule.
Fruit must be eaten alone.
There are many more rules included in the diet, which is designed as a companion guidebook to help you through each day.
