Jerusalem Diet

Ted Haggard’s book, The Jerusalem Diet, is named not after trying to eat like the ancient Jewish people, but after a trip he took to Jerusalem. On his trip, he discovered that if he was having trouble fitting into his pants, he took a day to eat only fruits, nuts, and vegetables, and to drink only water. This “fat day” strategy became the cornerstone of his book and the Jerusalem Diet plan.

Haggard believes that it is key for people to weigh in every day at the same time in order to stay on track with a healthy weight loss program. He suggests that everyone aim to lose one pound a week, and each morning, when you do not wake up at your target weight, you have a “fat day,” where you limit your foods and fit in one hour of exercise. If, when you weigh yourself, you are already at your target weight, you should eat normally. Haggard does not have a problem with readers mixing his suggestions with other diet plans, but he stresses the importance of having small, achievable goals rather than beating oneself up over the small “failures.”

Haggard suggests that making these small changes to your lifestyle over time is healthier and more likely to last than crash diets. He also says that periodic fasting may help you lose weight and “purify” your system.
