Hawaii Diet

The Hawaii Diet is a weight loss program based on the traditional Eastern way of eating—high in carbohydrates, low in meats and saturated fats. The diet’s creator, Dr. Terry Shintani, says that “there are no bad foods.” Instead, each food is assigned a number value based on the number of fat calories. Using the “Eat More Index,” you eat foods that fit the plan and are told to consume as many as 2500 calories per day. Obviously, people do not have to worry about feeling hungry on this diet. Shintani’s basic principle is that people should choose foods that give you a high amount of nutrition with each calorie you eat, avoiding calorie-dense sugary and fatty foods. The Hawaii Diet follows the “traditional” food pyramid, with fats at the top and grains at the bottom.

Natural, fat-free foods such as carrots, apples, and asparagus would have a higher number on the “Eat More Index,” and people who want to lose weight can apparently consume as many “high-number” foods as they wish and still lose weight. However, dieters are cautioned against eating too many “low-number” foods such as bacon, nuts, and cheese. The full weight loss program includes a diet book, a cookbook, an audio tape, meal suggestion cards, and a handy magnetic chart so you can convert all the food you eat to the correct “EMI” value.
